Willimantic, CT – In a country where there is approximately 3.9 million homeless dogs and cats, Mackey’s of Willimantic urged the public to give some deserving pets a home for the holiday.

It was not just another ordinary day at Mackey’s. Usually there would be customers checking out pet and garden supplies, but for Pet Adoption Day, it was a man’s best friend.

On Saturday, December 7th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Mackey’s hosted their 10th annual Pet Adoption Day. During the event community members came by to meet people and pets from local animal shelters and rescues including Rescue Dogs Rock, Second Chance Boxer Rescue, American Lab Rescue, Mansfield Animal Shelter, and more.

Mackey’s goal is to help your home continue to be a special place for it is, “Where the home grows.”

Family owned and founded in 1968, Terry Therrien, 3rd generation and Vice President of Operations said, “Originally started in 2009, this event was created to raise awareness for the local shelters and try to find homes for the rescues while raising funds for them.”

Along with a Pet Adoption Day, Mackey’s put on a Stuff-A-Stocking event where customers could get 20% off all items* able to fit in a stocking. Therrien continued, “For Stuff-A-Stocking, you get a stocking with a minimum $2 donation to support the local pet rescues and shelters. You can fill the stocking with gifts for your pet and loved ones.”

Long time foster dog-mom Robin Mott explained, “I love Mackey’s Pet Adoption Day, last year I had all five of my foster puppies adopted into forever homes. Fostering dogs is just really rewarding.”

Nancy Lawson of Boxer Spirit Rescue educated the public on why adopting from rescues and shelters is important instead of going to a pet store for a puppy. One of her rescues, Freedom, was a 6 year old boxer from Ohio who had only known the streets his whole life. One of his legs had to be amputated due to injury.

Lawson said, “Rescued dogs make excellent pets. When you come to us you can know that they have been taken care of, that they are up to date on all their shots, and ready to be part of a family.”

Like always, the event turned out to be a huge success and employees and rescues were pleased with the turnout.

Other Mackey’s store locations include Colchester and Woodstock CT. The next Pet Adoption Day will be on Sunday, December 15th, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in Woodstock CT.
